A woman and a man lean closely towards each other across a chess table in “Game Night II” by Mariya Yugina. The woman wears a dark burgundy dress, with a long red glove extending along her arm towards the man’s face. Seated in a vivid blue jacket and bow tie, he holds her other hand. Their gazes meet above the few chess pieces between them.
Behind the couple, tall window panels open onto stylised buildings in blue, turquoise, cream and orange. Warm coral and pink shades fill the walls and ceiling, while a sequence of pale circular forms leads the eye into the background. Broad, visible brushstrokes and angular fields of colour give the interior a lively surface.
The scene may suggest a moment when the game becomes less important than the encounter between the two. The chessboard introduces a possible story of strategy and attraction, while the figures’ gestures give the subject a romantic, theatrical quality. The horizontal 90 × 60 cm format gathers their movements into a closely framed composition, with the blue jacket counterbalancing the warm colours of the room.
