Five stylised women gather in a closely arranged social scene in “Incognito party” by Mariya Yugina. Masks, long gloves and a large dark fan give the figures individual expressions, while their faces and bodies are constructed from angular fields of colour. Warm orange, pink and brown tones meet deep green and almost black areas.
Below, a small chessboard with slender pieces sits on a round green table. Hands reach towards the game, while a tall glass, pearl necklaces and a long cigarette holder add elegant social details. A large spiral-shaped hairstyle in the upper left provides a flowing counterpoint to the composition’s sharp angles.
The title and the different ways of concealing the face may suggest identity, assumed roles and what is hidden or revealed at a gathering. The chess imagery introduces another layer of play and interaction without defining a single story. The square 90 × 90 cm format brings gazes, gestures and patterns together in a colourful composition with a Cubist character.
