Claus Thurøe
Visual artist
Born 1965 in Copenhagen
I have been making art since 1983, when I started with collages on paper. In 1986 I then started painting, first on plates, then on canvas in 1989.
Over the years I have made paintings inspired by industrial environments, Japan, the Faroe Islands, natural landscapes and urban landscapes, and people.

Natural landscapes/ Faroese paintings
I have visited the Faroe Islands several times and tried to express my experiences.
I am very inspired by the Faroese landscape.
In my Faroese paintings, I try to show the magnificent nature and the interaction between it and the man-made.
The green meadows, the black rocks and the colorful houses spiced with sky and sea merge into a higher unity.
You should be able to hear the shapes and colors when you look at my paintings. I love different colors, so it is important for me to have yellow, red, blue, black and white houses.

Urban landscapes
Since 2016, I have taken up motifs where I imagine medieval cities in Europe.
The random way houses were built in the Middle Ages fascinates me.
The way the cities have arisen in stages and the houses are located almost randomly. The inspiration comes from, among other things from medieval European cities.
I depict the monumental buildings, but also the small streets and squares, and quirky spaces in the city.
Some paintings deal with imaginative cities, others are more concrete cities.
During the process, the painting can seem fairly chaotic to me, where I eventually tighten up the expression. It's almost magical to me.
