A chessboard with green and pink pieces sits at the centre of a warm, golden still life in “Golden evening” by Mariya Yugina. Flowers, slender glasses and a plate holding two pink macarons gather around it. In the lower right, an open book lies beneath a red rose, while a large pair of scissors rises behind the objects on the table.
Shiny spheres and long strands of bead-like dots and drops hang from branching forms above. Small reflections within the spheres create pictures within the picture. On the left, a rounded bouquet stands in a green vase before a fan-shaped form. Deep-blue background fields contrast with the orange, ochre and golden-yellow shades.
The subject brings everyday objects together in an imaginative scene of shifting scale and perspective. Chess, reading, flowers and sweet treats may suggest an evening with time for contemplation and enjoyment. The square 80 × 80 cm format allows the eye to wander between the tabletop details and the suspended, reflective forms.
