Tall, twisting trunk-like forms fill “The Troll Forest” by Birthe Villaume. Black and dark-brown contours run between fields of grey, cream, ochre and pale blue. Fine, branch-like lines curl away from the larger shapes, forming loops and pointed extensions within the light spaces.
The forest appears dense, yet not enclosed. Cool blue and whitish passages open between the trunks, while warm yellow and golden-brown strokes follow their edges and gather along the bottom. Broad, soft brush marks meet sharp dark accents, allowing some forms to emerge clearly while others merge with the background.
Birthe Villaume accompanies the work with the words: “The troll forest’s silence hides light, life and secrets.” The twisting shapes may reinforce this fairy-tale atmosphere, suggesting figures among the trees without defining them. The square 80 × 80 cm format brings together the forest’s vertical movements and offers room to explore its many lines and shifts of colour.
